Abstract
This study aims to analyze the factors behind the defeat of Faldo Maldini and Moh. Fadhlin Akbar in the 2024 Tangerang City Regional Head Election. Faldo Maldini, a young national-level politician supported by the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), was expected to attract the younger generation through a narrative of change and digital campaign strategies. However, the pair failed to secure victory. The research applies a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five key informants, namely Faldo Maldini, the Chairperson of PSI Tangerang City, a volunteer coordinator, a campaign team member, and a local political analyst. In addition, the researcher reviewed documents and media coverage related to the 2024 Tangerang City election. Data analysis refers to Peter Schroder’s theory of political strategy, which distinguishes between offensive and defensive strategies. The findings indicate that both internal and external factors contributed to the defeat. Internally, weaknesses included limited grassroots presence, inadequate logistics, an unstructured campaign team, and strategies that failed to reach broader voters. Externally, the candidates faced stronger opponents with deeper local roots, established political machinery, and greater financial resources. PSI’s image as a youth-centric elite party also lacked strong local grounding. This study is expected to contribute to the development of regional campaign strategies and serve as a reference for political parties, candidates, and scholars in understanding the dynamics of local politics.
