Abstract
The phenomenon of increasing prevalence of active smokers among Indonesian adolescents, with 7.4% of youths aged 10–18 years identified as active smokers according to the 2023 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (SDKI), poses a concerning problem for the nation's future generation. The lack of effective interpersonal communication between children and family members often results in adolescents lacking a strong value foundation in making behavioral decisions, including those related to smoking. This study aims to determine the extent to which the effectiveness of interpersonal communication within the family influences non-smoking behavior among adolescents. The study employs Joseph A. DeVito’s theory of interpersonal communication effectiveness, which consists of five main dimensions: openness, empathy, supportive attitude, positive attitude, and equality. A quantitative explanatory approach was used, with simple linear regression analysis. The population consisted of adolescents aged 10–19 years who meet the inclusion criteria. The results indicate a significant effect of interpersonal communication effectiveness within the family on adolescents’ non-smoking behavior, with an R Square value of 0.719, meaning 71.9%. The supportiveness dimension in effective interpersonal communication was the strongest contributing to non-smoking behavior among adolescents, with an average score of 3.89. These findings confirm that effective interpersonal communication between family members and adolescents is a crucial factor in shaping knowledge, attitudes, and actions toward healthy behaviors, specifically non-smoking behavior.
