Abstract
This study examines the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in news production at detikcom, using Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory as an analytical framework. Focusing on the implementation of the JAI system, the institutional motives behind AI adoption, and the structural transformation of the journalistic field, the research employs a qualitative case study method, incorporating in-depth interviews with 18 informants, observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that JAI is applied in a hybrid model, where AI serves as a supportive tool while editorial control remains with human journalists. The decision to adopt AI reflects the strategic interests of dominant actors who align editorial, product, and business goals. This has led to structural shifts in the field, including the entry of new actors such as the AI Research Division, the emergence of a new form of capital (technological capital) and a change in journalistic habitus from investigative norms to a culture of efficiency and adaptability. The study also highlights the presence of symbolic violence by dominant actors and a form of compromise within the field, as editorial teams negotiate with algorithmic logics. Conceptually, this research contributes by proposing technological capital as a new form of power in digital journalism and introducing the idea of compromise as an adaptive strategy used by legacy actors in response to technological transformation. These findings expand Bourdieu’s field theory by integrating the dynamics of AI, offering a sociological lens to understand the evolving power structures and practices in AI-driven journalism.
