Abstract

The problem identified in the MSP (Melt State Polycondensation) production process at PT XYZ is the presence of product defects exceeding the company’s quality tolerance limit of 2.5%. These defects lead to decreased product quality and reduced production efficiency. This study aims to identify the dominant types of defects and control product quality using the Six Sigma method through the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) approach. Based on the analysis, three dominant defect types were found Slight Diagonal Chip (49.47%), Double Chip (35.4%), and Abnormal Chip (12.26%). In the Improve stage, corrective actions were proposed using the Kaizen approach, including the development of work instructions for the pelletizing process, inspection of the electrical and stabilizer systems, preparation of a preventive maintenance checklist for the pelletizer machine, and the design of a routine operator inspection checklist. After implementation, the defect rate decreased from 0.89% to 0.78%, the DPMO value dropped from 1,481.2 to 1,297.761, and the sigma level improved from 4.89 to 4.93. These results show that applying the Six Sigma method systematically is effective in reducing defects and maintaining production process stability. This study also contributes to minimizing waste, preventing machine failures, and improving operator precision in quality control.
