Abstract

The rear axle shaft is a crucial component in the drivetrain system of heavy-duty vehicles such as dump trucks. Failure in the shaft may cause operational disruptions and pose safety risks. This study aims to analyze the strength of the rear axle shaft using AISI 4340 steel material under a load of 54,788 N. The method used is numerical simulation with a finite element approach to evaluate maximum stress, deformation, fatigue life, and safety factor. The initial shaft design with a 48 mm diameter did not meet safety standards. To address this issue, improvements were made by increasing the diameter to 50 mm, 55 mm, and 60 mm. Simulation results showed that increasing the diameter positively impacted the shaft's mechanical performance. The 60 mm diameter design yielded the best results with a stress value of 146.89 MPa, deformation of 936.4 mm, fatigue life of 7.5478 × 10⁴, and a safety factor of 5.7. Based on these results, the 60 mm diameter is recommended as the safest and most reliable design for use in dump trucks.
