Abstract

The Youth 4 Impact Global Volunteer 2024 program, organized by AIESEC at Universitas Indonesia, provided a space for international volunteers from various countries to engage in teaching and cultural exchange activities in Indonesian schools. Over the course of six to eight weeks, these volunteers faced intercultural communication challenges and encountered significant cultural differences compared to their home countries. This study aims to explore how the volunteers interpreted their experiences of culture shock and how they adapted within a cross-cultural environment. Utilizing a qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the research involved ten informants from diverse national backgrounds who were interviewed using semi-structured techniques. The data analysis process included verbatim transcription, repeated reading, identification of significant statements, thematic categorization, formulation of experiential essences, and interpretation through the lens of Young Yun Kim’s Cross-Cultural Adaptation theory. The findings reveal that the volunteers experienced emotional tension and cultural disorientation when facing differences in values, language, social norms, and sensitive topics such as religion. However, over time with social support from local committees and intensive interaction with the host community, they developed communication strategies and self-reflection that supported their adaptation process. These experiences contributed to the formation of identities that were more open, flexible, and empathetic toward cultural diversity. The study affirms that intercultural communication is not merely a tool for exchanging messages, but also a transformative process through which individuals reshape their understanding of self and others across cultural boundaries.
