Abstract
Amid the political tensions during the 2024 Indonesian general election, newsrooms also faced internal challenges, such as media affiliation with the government and issues of press freedom both within editorial spaces and in the public or governmental spheres. Kompas.com held the reputation of being a trusted media outlet among the public. This study aims to examine the press freedom experienced by Kompas.com journalists during the 2024 election, following the platform’s designation as the most trusted media outlet according to a Reuters survey, and to assess the validity of that survey. The study applies the Social Responsibility Theory of the press, which includes indicators that the press must present accurate, balanced, and non-misleading news, uphold journalistic ethics, and comply with national laws regarding the press and political communication. Political communication refers to how political officials use media as a tool of influence. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Primary data were obtained through interviews with four Kompas.com journalists who were specifically assigned to cover the 2024 election. The findings indicate that intervention in press freedom during the 2024 election persists in subtle forms, reflecting acts of self-censorship. Such practices raise concerns about the disruption of the media’s role as the fourth pillar of democracy in Indonesia.
