Abstract
This research explores the phenomenon of celebrity diplomacy in international relations through a case study of BTS’s role as a global celebrity in addressing Asian Hate in the United States during the 2020–2022 period. Racial discrimination against Asian communities surged amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, China. BTS, a South Korean music group with global influence, emerged not only as a cultural icon but also as an active participant in social campaigns such as “Love Myself” with UNICEF, promoting anti-violence and mental health awareness. In 2022, BTS was invited by President Joe Biden to the White House to discuss anti-Asian hate. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method using literature review and digital research approaches. The findings indicate that BTS effectively acted as a non-state actor or celebrity diplomat, significantly influencing global discourse through social campaigns, participation in international forums, and mobilization of support from their global fandom (ARMY). The study reinforces the concept of celebrity diplomacy as an effective strategy in contemporary diplomacy in the globalization era.
