Abstract
This study aims to analyze and identify communication patterns applied by single parent mothers to their children at adolescence. In addition, from the communication patterns analyze, what kind of self-concept is formed in their children in the family. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Researchers conducted observations and in-depth interviews with informants with primary and secondary data sources and coded the results of observations and interviews using a deductive coding system. The results of this study indicate that four out of five single mothers use democratic communication patterns, which is why their teenage children give children space to express their opinions and mothers as friends. The self-concept formed by single mothers with democratic communication patterns is that most teenagers have not found their identity, but teenagers have begun to determine the profession they want to do in the future. In addition, all teenagers can also respond to problems positively and become good people. So it can be concluded that there is no negative tendency either from communication between mothers and children and the self-concept formed in children, even though there is no father figure in the family.
