Abstract

The phenomenon of long-distance relationships between children and parents presents distinct challenges in maintaining communication quality, especially when parenting styles differ, such as strict and non-strict. The challenges that arise are not solely related to physical distance but also concern how communication patterns can be maintained amid limited face-to-face interaction in order to preserve the parent–child relationship. This study aims to examine the communication patterns between children and strict parents in a long-distance relationship, explore the communication patterns between children and non-strict parents in a similar context, and compare the communication dynamics that develop within these two types of relationships. The theoretical framework used in this research is Relational Dialectics Theory, which emphasizes the dynamic contradictions inherent in interpersonal relationships. This study adopts a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to explore the subjective experiences of children in maintaining long-distance communication with their parents. The results of this study show that a strict parenting style does not always have negative impacts. In the context of a long distance relationship, children still feel emotionally supported and consistently experience their parents’ presence. Conversely, a non-strict parenting style tends to result in less intensive communication, which can lead to emotional distancing and a weakening of the parent–child relationship.
