Abstract

This study aims to explore how NCTzen respond to negative sentiments on social media platform X, particularly those related to fanaticism and consumerist behavior. The background of this research stems from the recurring negative stereotypes associated with NCTzen, especially concerning behaviors perceived as excessive and consumptive. This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to explore the subjective experiences of individuals as part of the fandom community. The theoretical framework is based on the Social Identity Theory by Henri Tajfel and John Turner, which emphasizes the processes of social categorization, group identification, and social comparison between ingroups and outgroups. Ten informants in this study were active members of the NCTzen fandom. Data were collected through in-depth interviews conducted both online and offline, then analyzed with the assistance of qualitative data analysis software. The findings reveal that NCTzen's responses to negative sentiment include ignoring, reflective reactions, and defensive stances. These responses are influenced by group identification, shared values, and efforts to maintain a positive image as members of the community. This study concludes that fanatical and consumerist behaviors are not merely individual actions but are part of the dynamics of maintaining a collective social identity within digital fandom culture.
