Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of primordial politics in the victory of Bubun Borong in the 2024 Legislative Election in North Toraja. Primordialism, referring to ethnic, religious, and kinship bonds, significantly influences local political dynamics, especially in regions where traditional social structures remain strong. The study uses a qualitative approach with data collected through in-depth interviews involving key informants, including Bubun Borong as the primary subject, as well as community figures and voters in Electoral District III of North Toraja. The findings reveal that primordial factors such as extended family ties (kinship), ethnic background, religious closeness, and active involvement in socio-religious activities served as Bubun Borong's main strategies to build trust, strengthen her voter base, and secure electoral support. These strategies aligned with personal and cultural narratives that strongly influenced local voter preferences. This study concludes that primordial politics remains an effective force in local political contests when utilized with an adaptive and communicative approach toward the electorate.
