Abstract
This research aims to analyze the factors causing Ridwan Kamil's failure in the 2024 Jakarta Special Region (DKJ) Regional Head Election (Pilkada). The research employs a qualitative approach with an explanatory type, gathering data through literature study, media documentation, and in-depth interviews with key political actors, local figures, and Jakarta residents with direct relevance to the political dynamics in Jakarta. The results indicate that Ridwan Kamil’s failure was primarily due to weak political communication strategies, particularly in addressing local concerns, and the lack of strong socio-political networks at the local level. Based on Gabriel Almond’s political communication theory, Ridwan Kamil failed to effectively engage in all three stages of political communication—input, conversion, and output. Additionally, Edward Aspinall’s clientelism theory highlights the necessity of establishing a patron-client network, including support from strategic communities such as The Jakmania. These findings underscore that electoral success in metropolitan areas such as Jakarta demands not only a solid communication strategy but also a profound understanding of the voters’ cultural identity and local sensitivities. This research contributes to the development of political communication studies and offers practical insights for future political campaigns in urban Indonesia, emphasizing the need for adaptive communication strategies and the importance of local socio-political networks.
