Abstract
Erosion wear is a significant issue in industries involving high speed erosive particles, which can reduce the service life of components. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of erosion wear rate, the effect of impact angle, and the wear mechanism on SS-304 and SKD11 materials. The testing was conducted using the sandblasting method at angles of 30°, 60°, and 90°, accompanied by erosion rate analysis, microscopic observation of cross-sections, and Vickers hardness tests before and after erosion. The results showed that the 30° angle produced the highest erosion rate, namely 414.43 × 10⁻⁴ cm³/kg for SS-304 and 388.00 × 10⁻⁴ cm³/kg for SKD11, while the 90° angle produced the lowest erosion rate, namely 300.57 × 10⁻⁴ cm³/kg for SS-304 and 246.07 × 10⁻⁴ cm³/kg for SKD11. The optical microscope showed indications of a cutting mechanism at low angles and gouging at high angles. The hardness of SS-304 increased from 209 HV to 214 HV, while SKD11 decreased from 250 HV to 223 HV, but remained within the acceptable range. The presence of M7C3 carbides in SKD11 is suspected to contribute to its better erosion resistance. This study contributes to understanding the comparative performance of materials against erosion wear, supporting material selection in erosive working environments.
