Abstract
This study aims to evaluate and optimize the suction piping system on a dredger through a comparative analysis of pressure drop between a conventional pipe and a spiral pipe. The simulation was conducted using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method, by varying the flow velocity (0.5-2.5 m/s), the volume fraction of solids (5%, 15%, and 25%), and the pipe slope of 7°, which represents a dredging depth of 5 meters. The simulation results show that at a velocity of 0.5 m/s and a volume fraction of 5%, the pressure drop of the spiral pipe is only 30.56 Pa, lower than that of the conventional pipe which reaches 55.83 Pa. However, at a velocity of 2.5 m/s and a volume fraction of 25%, the pressure drop of the spiral pipe increases to 966.18 Pa, while that of the conventional pipe is 805.39 Pa. After adding slope, the spiral pressure drop value decreased to 676.33 Pa, indicating the positive influence of the geometric configuration. In addition, the power-law index (n) value of the spiral pipe reaches 1.63, higher than the conventional pipe with (n) 1.30, indicating dilatant fluid properties. These results indicate that the selection of pipe design and slope configuration greatly affects the flow efficiency and overall performance of the dredging system.
