Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of restricted waters on sway force and yaw moment acting on a ship due to the bank effect, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The case study was conducted on a 1:40 scale KRISO Container Ship (KCS) model with variations in speed, water depth (1.3T and 1.6T), and drift angles from 2° to 10°. Simulation results show that restricted water conditions, particularly shallow depths and the ship's proximity to canal walls, significantly intensify the bank effect, leading to increased sway force and yaw moment. This phenomenon occurs due to a pressure imbalance around the ship’s hull, especially on the side closer to the canal wall, caused by flow constriction that accelerates the surrounding water. Larger drift angles and higher ship speeds further amplify the generated lateral force and yaw moment. Shallow water conditions exacerbate the bank effect due to more extreme flow acceleration beneath the hull. These findings confirm that navigating in narrow and shallow waterways increases the risk of course deviation caused by bank effect. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to serve as a useful reference in planning ship maneuvering and designing safer navigation routes in restricted waters.
