Abstract

“The Dream Scratch” is a documentary film that presents the story of a young volunteer who dedicates his time to teaching children from scavenger families living near the TPST Bantargebang area. The film focuses on the volunteer’s struggle to balance a full-time job with his commitment to informal education. It captures the challenges of delivering learning activities in a non-ideal environment, along with the social dynamics of a marginalized community. Adopting a portrait documentary style and a free cinema approach, the film utilizes handheld and static cinematography to create a realistic and intimate visual experience. As the cinematographer and editor, the documentarian is responsible for recording meaningful visuals and constructing a cohesive narrative through editing techniques. Montage and cutaway are applied during the editing phase to support the storytelling structure and maintain visual rhythm. With a runtime of approximately 30 minutes, this film not only documents social realities but also serves as a reflective medium on the role of education in limited conditions. Through a humanist lens, “The Dream Scratch” provides a visual representation of service and dedication in often overlooked communities.
