Abstract

Chemotherapy as a treatment for breast cancer can lead to serious complications, such as febrile neutropenia. The administration of empirical antibiotics is the primary management approach for febrile neutropenia. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of antibiotics as a therapy for febrile neutropenia in post-chemotherapy breast cancer patients at Dharmais Cancer Hospital Jakarta in 2023. This study was an observational study with retrospective data collection method based on patients' medical records from the inpatient unit of Dharmais Cancer Hospital Jakarta in 2023. A total of 25 patients’ medical records were selected using the total sampling method. Data were analyzed using statistical tests that compared body temperature and Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) values before and after antibiotic administration. The results showed a significant decrease in body temperature to normal levels (p < 0,001), as well as a significant increase in ANC values (p < 0,001) between before and after antibiotic treatment. The administration of antibiotics was effective in managing febrile neutropenia, as evidenced by a significant decrease in body temperature to normal levels and a significant increase in ANC values.
