Abstract

Earthquake disaster is a threat that can occur at any time and often causes huge losses, both in terms of material and casualties. Earthquake mitigation education is very important to increase public awareness and preparedness. This research aims to design and develop an Android-based Virtual Reality (VR) application as an educational medium for earthquake mitigation. This application provides simulations of earthquake scenarios involving disaster preparedness bags, shelter simulations and evacuation simulations. To guide users during the evacuation simulation, the A-Star pathfinding algorithm is implemented with two types of heuristic functions, namely Manhattan and Euclidean. The performance of the A-Star algorithm using these two heuristics is compared based on computation time, number of nodes visited, total cost, and length of the resulting path. The test results show that the Manhattan heuristic has an advantage in the efficiency of computing time and visited nodes, while the Euclidean heuristic excels in producing shorter paths and path costs, but with longer computing time. In this earthquake mitigation educational application, the Manhattan Distance heuristic function is more recommended because it considers the load that will be processed by each device will be less and the resulting path is more comfortable to see and easy to follow even though it is slightly longer. This application is expected to be an effective educational facility in increasing public knowledge and preparedness for earthquake disasters.
