Abstract
Students at UPN "Veteran" Jakarta currently use general social media for academic discussions, but these platforms do not provide structured spaces focused on academic needs. To address these limitations, developing a specialized discussion forum application supporting real-time interactions is necessary. Developing such an application presents technical challenges, as traditional architectures that rely on synchronous communication often experience high latency and bottlenecks during interactive sessions. This research aims to design and develop a real-time discussion forum application using event-driven architecture to facilitate more effective academic communication. The Extreme Programming methodology was employed with Redis Pub/Sub as a message broker and Socket.IO for real-time communication implementation. The developed system was successfully validated through a User Acceptance Test (UAT), achieving a score of 95.73%. Furthermore, evaluation results show significant improvements compared to traditional architecture, with response times faster by 39.1%-58.9%, end-to-end latency reduction of 16.4%-50.2%, and more efficient memory usage by 6.1%-8.9%. The system maintains optimal performance at peak load with 1,980 active users. Event-driven architecture effectively enhances responsiveness and efficiency of real-time discussion forum applications, creating a more interactive academic communication platform for students.
