Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease that can cause various serious complications if not managed properly. One of them is diabetic neuropathy, which can be characterized by a decrease in the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) value. Diabetes control can be done through two ways, namely pharmacological with regular consumption of drugs, and non-pharmacological. One of the nonpharmacological therapies is Buerger Allen Exercise. This study aims to provide family nursing care, especially to the elderly who have diabetes mellitus problems. The research subjects consisted of two elderly people, namely one managed elderly and one resume elderly, both of whom suffered from diabetes mellitus. The design used in this research is a case study, with an intervention in the form of family nursing care conducted for three weeks. The results of the intervention showed that there was an increase in the average ABI value in both subjects. In Mrs. L, the ABI value increased from 0.88 to 0.90. While in Mrs. N, there was an increase from 0.90 to 0.92. The conclusion is that Buerger Allen Exercise has a positive impact in helping to reduce complications of diabetes mellitus, especially through improving peripheral circulation as indicated by an increase in ABI values. Buerger Allen Exercise (BAE) can be recommended as an alternative therapy to prevent complications of diabetic neuropathy.
