Abstract
Background: Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease marked by airway inflammation and recurrent symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing. Its global prevalence continues to rise, including in Indonesia, particularly in Depok City. The Buteyko breathing technique is a non-pharmacological intervention shown to effectively control asthma symptoms. It works by normalizing CO₂ levels in the lungs and blood through reduced hyperventilation. Controlled breathing and breath-holding help prevent CO₂ deficiency, stabilize blood pH, and reduce bronchospasm risk. Objective : To analyze the effectiveness of the Buteyko technique in reducing respiratory rate in asthma patients using a nursing care approach. Case Study Conducted on Mr. M, a 60-year-old male at Khidmat Sehat Afiat Regional Hospital (KISA), Depok, presenting with dyspnea, productive cough, and a respiratory rate of 29 breaths /minute. Method: A descriptive case study was carried out through interviews, observation, physical examination, and documentation. Interventions included the Buteyko technique, effective coughing, bronchodilator administration, and oxygen therapy. Results: After three days, the respiratory rate decreased to 24 breaths per minute. Control Pause improved from 5 to 11 seconds, with reduced wheezing and decreased use of accessory respiratory muscles. Conclusion: The Buteyko breathing technique is effective as a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce respiratory rate and improve clinical outcomes in asthma patients. It is suitable for integration into nursing practice.
