Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the patron-client relationship between Muhaimin Iskandar and traditional voters of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) at the At-Tauhid Sidoresmo Islamic Boarding School influences political preferences in the context of the 2024 Presidential Election in East Java. Using James C. Scott's (1972) patron-client theory, this study highlights that Muhaimin Iskandar, as a patron, obtains moral and political support from the Islamic boarding school through a strong socio-religious structure. Conversely, the Islamic boarding school obtains political benefits and strategic access in the national political world. This study uses a qualitative method with an explanatory approach to deeply understand the patterns of socio-political relations that occur in the Islamic boarding school environment. The findings in this study are that there is a patron-client relationship between Muhaimin Iskandar and the At-Tauhid Sidoresmo Islamic Boarding School that occurs through the exchange of political interests. Muhaimin Iskandar obtained legitimacy and political support from the network of kiai and santri at the At-Tauhid Sidoresmo Islamic Boarding School in the 2024 Presidential Election, which was mediated by KH Mas Mansur Tholhah and KH Nasirul Mahasin as political brokers in gathering around 200 kiai and gus throughout East Java to support Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar. In return, Muhaimin provides various routine social assistance every Ramadan, assistance with religious event proposals, assistance with facilities and infrastructure and access to policies through the PKB faction. This relationship is based on historical personal relationships, flexible interactions, and mutually beneficial economic- political interests. This shows that the patron-client relationship is still relevant as a method of political strategy to mobilize and shape the political preferences of the traditional NU community in East Java.
