Abstract

This study aims to discuss whether there is an effect of the interpersonal communication effectiveness of adolescents on the relational maintenance behaviors in the family using the relational maintenance theorie, this research based on the relationship between adolescents and parents being vulnerable to conflict and misunderstanding at this stage. The method used in this research is quantitative explanatory with data collection using probability sampling and purposive sampling techniques and collecting data through surveys with google forms. The results of the research showd that there was a very strong effect of the interpersonal communication effectiveness of adolescent on the relational maintenance behaviors in the family. This is indivated by adolescent who carry out the interpersonal communication effectiveness (openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality) and relational maintenance behaviors (group activities, talking, communication with mediation, avoidance, antisocial behavior, affection, and self-focus) when connected with their parents. In addition, it was found that adolecents prioritize equality in the interpersonal communication effectiveness and focus on themselves in relational maintenance behaviors.
