Abstract

This study, titled "Interpersonal Communication of Generation Z in Jakarta in Forming Preferences for Presidential Candidates in the 2024 Election," aims to understand how interpersonal communication influences the formation of political preferences among Generation Z in Jakarta. The research employs a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods to explore the subjective experiences of Generation Z in their social interactions with family, peers, and their surrounding environment. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with seven informants who met the criteria of being Generation Z and residing in Jakarta. The findings reveal that interpersonal communication plays a significant role in shaping Generation Z's political preferences. Interactions with family, friends, and community figures emerged as the primary factors influencing the informants' political perspectives. Furthermore, the polling station environment provided emotional and social experiences that affected their political decision-making. The study also found that visual symbols around polling stations and casual discussions among voters further reinforced confidence in previously made political choices. This research is expected to contribute to the literature on political communication, particularly regarding the role of interpersonal communication in shaping political preferences in the digital era. Practically, the findings of this study can serve as a guide for election organizers and political parties to enhance political engagement among Generation Z through more effective and relevant communication strategies.
