Abstract

This research explores the phenomenon of political idolatry within Pro-Jokowi (Projo) and its influence on the organization's character and political orientation as a volunteer movement during Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's presidency (2014–2024). Political idolatry, reflected in personal loyalty to Jokowi, has prevented Projo from fulfilling its critical role as a power watchdog. Instead of strengthening democracy, Projo has been co-opted into the power structure. This has eroded the oversight function of civil society and weakened civic culture. The analysis relies on primary data from interviews with active Projo leaders and academics. It also draws from secondary data, including literature studies and media reports. The findings show that during Jokowi's first term (2014–2019), Projo still functioned as a civil society entity, though its role was limited. However, in Jokowi's second term (2019–2024), Projo lost its independence and became a tool of the government to prolong its power. As a result, its oversight of the government weakened, tolerance for dissent diminished, and criticism became nearly absent. This study concludes that revitalizing an independent and critical political volunteer movement is essential for preserving the resilience of democracy against the threat of authoritarianism.
