Abstract
This study aims to address air pollution issues in the Banten region caused by coal combustion activities at the Suralaya power plant. PT Indonesia Power UBP Suralaya has taken swift action to mitigate the pollution's impact as part of its corporate social responsibility, particularly focusing on communities near the plant who are vulnerable to health issues such as acute respiratory infections (ISPA) and chronic lung diseases, especially among children under five. This research highlights the strategies of PT Indonesia Power UBP Suralaya in combating air pollution caused by coal combustion at the plant. It adopts Paul Hawken's Green Business theory, which emphasizes environmentally friendly technology to ensure business sustainability. The study employs a qualitative approach with explanatory research, based on in-depth interviews with representatives from PT Indonesia Power UBP Suralaya, the NGO Pena Masyarakat Banten, and environmental academics. Library research and documentation studies are also utilized. The findings demonstrate significant success in controlling air pollution, evidenced by a reduction in ISPA cases from 29,626 in 2022 to 17,328 in 2023, as reported by the NGO Pena. This achievement earned PT Indonesia Power UBP Suralaya 15 gold awards from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The study identifies two key strategies implemented by PT Indonesia Power UBP Suralaya to tackle air pollution from coal combustion. First, mitigation through CSR programs, air pollution education, regular vaccination campaigns, the establishment of eco-parks from hazardous waste (B3), and community empowerment in collaboration with Banten Province, environmental agencies, and health departments. Second, the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies, including the Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP), Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS), and monitoring by certified national standard laboratories. Additionally, the plant has partially transitioned its energy source from coal to organic waste to power turbines by up to 10%.
