Abstract
Background: Childhood obesity is a global health problem that can have a long-term impact on physical and psychological conditions in adolescents. Adolescents in the age range of 13-15 years experience the majority of obesity incidence at 25%. This is influenced by several factors including genetics, physical activity, hormonals, psychological, and social-economic factors. Lack of physical activity is often associated with an increased risk of obesity. Research Objective: This study aims to identify the relationship between physical activity and the incidence of obesity in junior high school students. Methods: This study used a quantitative design with correlational analytics involving 130 student respondents at SMPN 27 East Jakarta in 2024. Physical activity was measured using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C), while obesity data was obtained through measurement of Body Mass Index (BMI). Data analysis used Chi-square test to test the relationship between physical activity level and the incidence of obesity in children. Results: The results showed a significant association between low physical activity level and the incidence of obesity in junior high school students with p-value=0.001 (<0.05). Conclusion: This finding confirms the important role of physical activity in the prevention of obesity in students, and provides a basis for more effective interventions in reducing the prevalence of obesity in students through promotions. Keywords: Physical activity, obesity, junior high school students
