Abstract
This research discusses Egypt's strategy to secure funding from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for the development of Egypt's mega infrastructure projects during the 2017-2023 period. Egypt's efforts to secure funding were driven by the difficult living conditions faced by its citizens due to poor infrastructure, which was inadequate to support the population's needs. Issues such as those arising from Egypt's dry and arid geography, health problems resulting in fatalities due to inadequate sanitation facilities and clean water management, limited job opportunities causing structural unemployment, and transportation issues adversely affecting Egypt's economy highlight the challenges. Interestingly, despite these challenges, Egypt successfully obtained $1.5 billion in funding from AIIB only without facing any rejections or delays on proposals submitted for infrastructure projects during 2017-2023. Thus, this study aims to examine the various strategies employed by Egypt to obtain funding assistance from AIIB for infrastructure development. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and is based on two concepts: complex interdependence and foreign aid. The strategies highlighted in this study include Egypt's launch of the national framework called Egypt Vision 2030 in 2016, investment regulatory reforms enacted in 2017, efforts to issue green bonds to demonstrate Egypt's commitment to environmentally friendly projects, and hosting the 8th AIIB Annual Meeting for all member countries in 2023.
