Abstract
Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease caused by insulin resistance, often associated with increased visceral fat. Visceral fat, accumulated in the abdominal cavity, raises the risk of metabolic diseases. Students are prone to increased visceral fat due to unhealthy lifestyles. Objective: To determine the visceral fat levels among students of the Physiotherapy Department at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta. Methods: This study employed a descriptive method with a cross-sectional design, involving 228 physiotherapy students. Data were collected using a Body Composition Analyzer InBody 570. Results: Most respondents had visceral fat levels in the normal category (66.7%), but one-third showed high to very high visceral fat levels (33.3%). Female students had a higher proportion of high and very high visceral fat levels (35.2%) compared to male students (24.4%). Smokers exhibited a higher proportion of high and very high visceral fat levels (36.4%) compared to non-smokers (33.2%). Visceral fat levels increased with a rise in BMI, with the obese category showing a prevalence of very high visceral fat at 82.9%. Conclusion: While the majority of students had normal visceral fat levels, a significant proportion is at high risk, underscoring the need for adopting a healthy lifestyle.
