Abstract
The Annual Record of Violence Against Women notes that cases of sexual violence in universities are increasing per year, along with online news reports about cases of sexual violence in universities are increasing. The purpose of this study is to determine how much influence the exposure of online news of sexual violence in university has on the perception of the mean world syndrome among communication science’s female students in UPN Veteran Jakarta. The theory used in this research is cultivation theory. The method used in this research is quantitative method and explanatory research type. The research will be conducted on 94 samples of communication science female students in UPN Veteran Jakarta through online questionnaires. The results show that there is a positive influence between exposure to online news of sexual violence in university on the perception of mean world syndrome, which is 11.4% and the influence of the perception of mean world syndrome is stronger through the insecurity dimension, which is 12.3% than through the mistrust dimension, which is 3.3%. The results found that the heavy viewers had a higher perception of mean world syndrome compared to the light viewers and respondents who had never been victims of sexual violence had a higher perception of mean world syndrome compared to respondents who had been victims of sexual violence.
