Abstract

Emergency nurses often faced high-pressure situations that lead to ethical dilemmas and moral distress, such as the high volume of patient visits and complex cases in the ED. To avoid ethical violations resulting from these conditions, nurses must demonstrate good and consistent ethical behavior. One important factor underlying ethical behavior in nurses is moral sensitivity, which refers to the ability to identify and respond to ethical issues in complex situations. This study aims to examine the relationship between the level moral sensitivity and ethical behavior among ED nurses at Tarakan Regional Hospital, Jakarta. A cross-sectional design with total sampling was used, involving 36 respondents. Data were collected using the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire-Revised Version (MSQ-R) translated into Indonesian, and the Indonesian version of the Nurses’ Ethical Behavior in Protecting Patients’ Rights (I-NEBPPR) questionnaire. Descriptive analysis showed that the majority of respondents had moderate levels of moral sensitivity and sufficient levels of ethical behavior. Spearman Rank test results indicated a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.433) between moral sensitivity and nurses' ethical behavior (p = 0.008). This suggests that higher moral sensitivity in nurses is associated with better ethical behavior. This study emphasizes the importance of enhancing nurses' moral sensitivity to support better ethical behavior and improve the quality of services in the ED.
