Abstract

Hypertension is a serious health problem that can have a considerable impact on adolescents, often leading to complications including kidney and heart problems, among others. This study aims to examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) scores and physical activity with the incidence of hypertension. The present study employs a quantitative design, utilizing a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 261 students was selected through stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using direct measurement of BMI, blood pressure, and International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF). The findings of this study indicated a significant relationship between BMI and the risk of hypertension in students, with a p-value of less than 0.001. However, the relationship between physical activity and the risk of hypertension in students was not significant, with p-values of 0.531 and 0.492, respectively. Consequently, it can be concluded that high BMI is one of the risk factors for hypertension, while physical activity has an indirect effect on the risk of hypertension in adolescents. To mitigate the risk, direct interventions, such as educational initiatives emphasizing the significance of maintaining an optimal BMI range, coupled with regular health monitoring, should be considered.
