Abstract

Hypertension is one of the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) which is one of the highest prevalence among the elderly, often exacerbated by stress levels and poor sleep quality as supporting factors for hypertension recurrence. This study aims to determine the relationship between stress levels and sleep quality with the frequency of hypertension recurrence in the elderly in the RW 006 area of Gunung Sahari Selatan Village. The research method is a cross sectional approach. The sample consisted of 137 elderly people selected using stratified proportional puposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using the Perceived Stress Scale questionnaire, The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Hypertension Recurrence questionnaire, which had been tested for validity and reliability. The validity test results showed that all questionnaire items had a correlation value> 0.361, reliability with Cronbach's alpha value> 0.60. The results of bivariate analysis through the Chi-Square test, showed a significant relationship between the variable stress level and the frequency of hypertension recurrence (P-value = 0.001) as well as between sleep quality and the frequency of hypertension recurrence (P-value = 0.000). These findings suggest that stress levels and poor sleep quality increase the risk of hypertension recurrence. Nursing interventions in the form of education and counseling can be developed to help the elderly manage stress and improve their sleep quality to reduce hypertension recurrence.
