Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major global health challenge with increasing prevalence. Central obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 DM. SKI 2023 data shows that DKI Jakarta ranks first in central obesity (45.7%) in Indonesia, with the majority of the population being of productive age who often have unhealthy lifestyles. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between central obesity and type 2 DM in productive age in DKI Jakarta. The study design used was cross-sectional with secondary data from interviews and measurements on SKI 2023. The study population was of productive age (19-64 years). A total sample of 7,432 registered in the individual and household level questionnaires was analyzed after weighting-up to the multivariate stage with multiple logistic regression. The prevalence of type 2 DM was 1.8%. Multivariate analysis showed an increased risk of type 2 DM in the central obese group (POR=7.15; 95% CI=2.19-23.35) compared to the non-central obese group. Covariate variables including physical activity (POR=5.26; 95% CI: 1.64-16.90), heavy smoking (POR=2.34; 95% CI=1.01-5.42), and hypertension (POR=3.79; 95% CI=2.58-5.57) increased the risk of type 2 DM. There is an interaction variable between central obesity and physical activity. It is expected that the community will routinely perform early detection of central obesity and risk factors for type 2 DM.
