Abstract

Fungal infections, such as candidiasis caused by Candida albicans and pityriasis versicolor caused by Malassezia furfur, have a high prevalence in Indonesia. Conventional antifungal therapies face limitations, including resistance and side effects. Natural alternatives, such as brotowali stem (Tinospora crispa) extract, hold potential as antifungal agents due to their active compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids, tannins, and saponins. This study aims to evaluate the antifungal effectiveness of ethanol extract from brotowali stem against C. albicans and M. furfur in vitro. The study employed a laboratory experimental design using the well diffusion method. The inhibition zone diameters on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar were measured after 48 hours to determine effectiveness at extract concentrations of 45%, 60%, 75%, and 90%. Data analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Post Hoc Mann-Whitney test. The results showed that ethanol extract from brotowali stem exhibited significant antifungal effects against C. albicans and M. furfur (p<0.05), with higher extract concentrations demonstrating stronger inhibitory effects on the growth of both fungi. The largest inhibition zone for C. albicans had a mean diameter of 5.93 mm, while for M. furfur it was 3.97 mm. Extract concentrations of 45%, 60%, and 75% against C. albicans showed weak antifungal activity, whereas at 90% concentration, moderate antifungal activity was observed. For M. furfur, all extract concentrations exhibited weak antifungal activity.
