Abstract
Decreased sperm motility is a common complication in patients with diabetes mellitus, caused by oxidative stress and reproductive dysfunction. Addressing this issue requires effective and safe interventions, one of which is the use of natural substances. Arenga pinnata (sugar palm) is known to contain antioxidant compounds that have the potential to reduce oxidative stress. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Arenga pinnata solution on sperm motility in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus L.) with diabetes. It also analyzed the differences in sperm motility between treated and untreated groups and determined the effective dose of Arenga pinnata solution for improving sperm motility in diabetic rats. Methods: A total of 30 male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: negative control, positive control, P1 (90 mg/day), P2 (180 mg/day), and P3 (360 mg/day). Diabetes was induced using alloxan. Sperm motility analysis Results: The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed a significant difference in sperm motility across groups (p = 0.000). The Mann-Whitney test showed no significant differences between P2 and P3 compared to the positive control (p = 0.522 and p = 0.465, respectively). However, the P1 group demonstrated a significant improvement in sperm motility compared to the positive control (p = 0.004). Conclusion: The administration of Arenga pinnata solution positively affects sperm motility in diabetic Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus L.). A dose of 90 mg/day was found to be the most effective among the tested doses, although it did not achieve sperm motility levels comparable to the negative control group without treatment.
