Abstract

Hypertension is one of the diseases with a high prevalence in Indonesia, especially among the elderly, which is 34.1%. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between cognitive function and adherence to combined antihypertensive medication among elderly patients at RSUD Hasanuddin Damrah Bengkulu Selatan. This study uses a cross-sectional observational design and involves 77 individuals who were purposively selected. The Spearman Rank Correlation Test was used to analyze the data collected using the Mini-Cog and MMAS-8 questionnaires. The research results show that the cognitive function of the majority of respondents is normal (72.7%) and the majority are non-compliant in taking medication (81.8%). Statistical analysis shows a significant relationship between cognitive function and medication adherence (p-value = 0.008), with a weak positive correlation (r = +0.299). Additionally, demographic variables such as age, gender, education level, place of residence, and medications consumed were studied. Elderly individuals with good cognitive function are more likely to be compliant, but overall compliance is low. Cognitive function is one of the important factors that influence adherence to antihypertensive medication in elderly patients. To improve medication adherence, educational programs and family support are necessary..
