Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective The prevalence of chronic kidney disease continues to rise each year. Hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for chronic kidney disease. Hyperlipidemia contributes to atherosclerosis and inflammation that can occur in the kidneys, which may subsequently develop into Interstitial Fibrosis and Tubular Atrophy (IFTA) or Interstitial Inflammation in the kidneys. Red betel leaf (Piper ornatum) contains flavonoids and alkaloids that have nephroprotective effects by lowering urea and creatinine levels.This study aims to investigate the effects of red betel leaf extract on improving the histopathological appearance of the kidneys in Wistar rats with a hyperlipidemia model. Method This study employs a true experimental method, focusing on histopathological lesions in the kidneys characterized by Interstitial Fibrosis and Tubular Atrophy (IFTA) and/or Interstitial Inflammation. A total of 25 Wistar rats with a hyperlipidemia model were divided into 5 groups: 2 control groups and 3 treatment groups, which received red betel leaf extract at doses of 250 mg/Kg, 500 mg/Kg, and 750 mg/Kg body weight. Result The results of the Kruskal-Wallis test and Post Hoc Mann-Whitney analysis showed a significance value (P-Value < 0,05). Conclusion Based on the research results, it was found that the extract of red betel leaf inhibits the progression of IFTA lesions and Interstitial Inflammation, exhibiting effects that are nearly equivalent to simvastatin when administered at adequate doses.
