Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) induces dyslipidemia that impact on fatty liver and other complications. Therefore, one of the required alternative treatment is purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) which have antioxidant, antihyperlipidemic, and antidiabetic effect. This study aimed to observe the effectiveness of purple sweet potato leaves extract (PSPLE) on histopathological improvement of fatty liver in diabetic Wistar rats. This study is true experimental with posttest only control group design using 2-3 month Wistar male rats with 150-300 gram weight. The sample rats divided into six groups with simple random sampling, group 1 which fed with standard pellet and water ad libitum, while group 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 were induced with a high-fat diet for 35 days and intraperitoneally injected with alloxan 125 mg/kgBW/day. Group 3 treated with simvastatin 0,9 mg/kgBW/day, while group 4, 5, 6 are the treatment group of PSPLE doses 150, 300, and 600 mg/kgBW/day for 18 days. Kruskal-Walliis test showed that PSPLE doses 150, 300, and 600 mg/kgBW/day has a significant effect (p < 0,05) on improving steatosis and lobular inflammation in fatty liver in diabetic Wistar rats. Post-Hoc Mann-Whitney test showed that PSPLE at 600 mg/kgBW/day has the best therapeutic effect in improving lobular inflammation in fatty liver where the degree of lobular inflammation as well as normal group (p=1,000).
