Abstract
Broken home families are a social phenomenon that deeply affects interpersonal communication between parents and children. This study aims to understand how interpersonal communication manifests and is perceived within the context of broken home families, using a qualitative approach based on Jonathan Smith's interpretative phenomenological theory. Data was collected through in- depth interviews with six children from broken home families, as well as through document analysis. For data analysis, the study adopted the Smith and Osborn model, which allows for an in-depth exploration of experiences and perceptions. The findings indicate that interpersonal communication experiences involving constructive feedback, openness, empathy, privacy, shared goals, and mutual influence in discussions between children and parents (mother or father) can contribute to harmony within broken home families. These elements help maintain positive and supportive relationships, despite the challenging family circumstances. By understanding and implementing effective communication aspects, members of broken home families can better preserve harmonious relationships and minimize the negative impacts of family breakdown.
