Abstract

Double burden malnutrition (DBM) refers to the occurrence of two nutritional issues simultaneously in an individual that affects the health and increase the risk of chronic diseases later in life. This study aimed to analyze the determinant factors of DBM among toddlers aged 6-23 months in West Kalimantan and West Papua, Indonesia. This study used secondary data obtained from Indonesia Nutrition Status Survey (SSGI 2022) and involved 697 toddlers from West Kalimantan and 342 toddlers from West Papua. The data were analyzed by multivariate analysis to identify determine factors of DBM using logistic regression. In total of the 1039 toddlers considered in this study, 14,9% experienced DBM with concurrent issues being stunting-underweight (11,0%) and stunting-overweight (3,9%). The multivariate analysis show that birth length (p=0,000; OR 2,106; 95% CI 1,484-2,988), ANC frequency (p=0,011; OR 1,580; 95% CI 1,112-2,246), and age of complementary feeding (p=0,002; OR 0,574; 95% CI 0,402-0,821) are significantly associated with DBM incidence in toddlers aged 6-23 month. In summary, the prevalence of concurrent stunting-underweight is the highest incidence of DBM with birth length to be the leading determinant factor for double burden malnutrition among toddlers aged 6-23 month in West Kalimantan and West Papua.
