Abstract

The documentary entitled “Simalakama Homo Jakartensis: Polusi Udara Megapolitan” will explore the impact of dirty air pollution in Jakarta through the perspective of its residents. Through the Free Cinema approach that combines narrative and cinematic aspects, this film presents the voices of the speakers who are directly affected, namely representations of students, street vendors, and office workers to open the public's eyes to the challenges and struggles being carried out. The bitter stories of the interviewees in describing the impact of air pollution in Jakarta open up insights into the interconnectedness of social and environmental issues, triggering exploratory content about the construction of the reality of life in this crowded and polluted city. The film not only illustrates the complexity of the air pollution problem, but also invites the public to act, raise awareness, and support changes towards a cleaner and healthier environment from the perspective of environmental observers. In this documentary, the documentarian works as a cameraman and sound stylist. The cameraman is responsible for conveying the message with the skills of image recording, lighting, and angle setting. The cameraman also helps the audience feel the depth of the story that is happening behind the scenes, assembling the truth, and designing a visual story so that the essence and purpose of the documentary can be achieved. Meanwhile, the sound stylist has an important working position in producing good sound quality. A sound stylist is required to enhance the image to be more meaningful. To produce quality sound, the sound stylist must master the techniques in taking sound in documentary film production, especially in recording audio interviews with sources so that information can be conveyed well to the public.
