Abstract
Myopia is the highest refractive error problem in the world. By 2050, it’s predicted that the prevalence of myopia will reach 49.8% globally. Myopia is known related to the intensive use of gadgets in modern society. Freelancers are a high-risk group for myopia because of intensive gadget habit. This study aims to determine relationship between duration of gadget use and the myopia incidence in Indonesian digital freelancers. A cross-sectional study conducted using primary data obtained by filling out questionnaires that was distributed through several Indonesian freelancer community between May – June 2024. There were 293 samples obtained by purposive sampling technique. This study conducted multivariate analysis using logistic regression model. There are 48,1% of freelancers with myopia. Freelancers who used gadgets for more than 6 hours a day had odds of 1.72 (1,052 – 2,825) times to experience myopia compared to other freelancers who used gadgets for less than 6 hours a day after being controlled by gadget viewing distances variable. It concluded that duration of gadget use is significantly related to the incidence of myopia in Indonesian freelancers. Freelancers recommend to use gadget in normal viewing distances, spend more time on outdoor activities, take regular eye breaks and get enough sleep.
