Abstract

Language is an effective public diplomacy tool for introducing a nation's identity. The high interest of foreigners in Indonesian language and culture is motivating Indonesia Youth Foundation (IYF) as a non-governmental organization for participate in public diplomacy through one of its flagship programs Indonesian Language Learning Program. This program teaches and disseminates Indonesian to foreign communities by utilizing the potential of the Indonesian language and Indonesian cultures. Not only learning Indonesian formally, IYF also takes advantage of Indonesia's cultural potential to increase Indonesia’s nation branding in international level. This research aims to identify IYF efforts in Indonesian public diplomacy through Indonesian Language Learning Program by using theories and concepts of public diplomacy and language as power. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods with the use of data primary and secondary obtained through data collection techniques in the form of semi-structured interviews, data, literature and related documents obtained from sources, print and online media. Results of this research shows that IYF's efforts in Indonesian public diplomacy are effective building a positive national image through an Indonesian language education approach. Through learning Indonesian and Cultural Sharing, foreign participants gain a new, in-depth view of Indonesia, as well as interest more towards Indonesia. However, there are still various obstacles faced by IYF including the spread of other foreign languages in various parts of the world, bad stigma related to Indonesia which is still circulating in society, as well as limitations in teaching staff in Indonesian Language Learning Program of IYF.
