Abstract
Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC) are a type of thermodynamic cycle used for waste heat to energy recovery. Research on ORC systems on ships with the aim of reducing fuel consumption which has an impact on reducing the levels of carbon emissions released into the air has been tried. But the efficiency of the organic fluid can still be improved. In this study, the objective is to analyze the thermodynamics of organic rankine cycle by comparing toluene, benzene, and propane fluids to find the best fluid to be used in the ORC exhaust system in ship engines. Simulation of the ORC thermodynamic system is carried out using 3 different organic fluids that are varied with 3 conditions, namely during high pressure conditions with a range of 3900 kpa to 4100 kpa and low pressure with a range of 23 kpa to 36 kpa and temperature variations with a range of 250 ºC to 300 ºC which are adjusted to the conditions of the sailing ship. The results of the simulation include enthalpy, energy, and efficiency. Propane fluid is superior to toluene and benzene in terms of enthalpy, energy and efficiency. Propane fluid testing successfully predicts the value of pump energy work with an average of 13.11 kj/kg, turbine energy work with an average of 471.6 kj/kg, evaporator thermal energy with an average of 1091.67 kj/kg, and condenser thermal energy with an average of 633.2 kj/kg. Propane fluid testing also successfully predicted an increase in efficiency with an average of 41%. These results occur due to an increase in temperature and pressure. Based on the above parameters, it has shown a thermal efficiency that exceeds the previous research of 39%. Thus this research can provide an in-depth understanding of the organic rankine cycle system on ships.
