Abstract

Inadequate nutrition during growth and development can lead to health problems such as wasting. Breast milk is a complex nutritional component derived from adipose tissue of the mammary glands produced to meet the needs of infants growth and development. Breast milk production can be influenced by various factors including body mass index (BMI). This study was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional study design involving 52 samples in the Bojong Health Center working area, Bogor Regency. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between BMI and breast milk fat content of breastfeeding mothers. Breast milk fat content was identified by Creamatocrit test. The results showed that most of subjects had normal BMI (48.1%) and the average breast milk fat content was 50.78 g/L. Obese BMI had the highest average breast milk fat content. Most of the normal and obese BMI subjects had high average levels of breast milk fat (>40 g/L). All subjects with underweight BMI had low breast milk fat levels (<35 g/L). The highest mean breast milk fat level was found at the lactation age of 1 week – 1 month. The results of bivariate analysis showed a p-value of 0.035 and a weak (r= 0.293) significant relationship between BMI and breast milk fat content in breastfeeding mothers. Keywords : breast milk, BMI, fat content, maternal nutrition status
