Abstract
According to World Health Organization in 2010, almost 6 million men were killed every year because of cigarettes and the number would increase every year. Indonesia was the third greatest consument of cigarette. Cigarette also contributed to 10% of heart problem especially coronary artery disease (CAD) while in Indonesia heart problem still become the number one killer. This study was aimed at revealing the relationship between smoking degree and the onset of angina pectoris in CAD male patients using a cross sectional design. Data were obtained using a questionnaire of smoking habit that will be catagorized in brinkman index and ROSE questionnaire that described angina pectoris, one of the sign coronary artery disease. The questionnaire was distributed to 67 patients using a consecutive technique sampling. Population of the study was all male patients who came to the Departement of Cardiology Gatot Soebroto Central Army Hospital to get a medication with a coronary artery disease or angina pectoris history with the minimal onset of angina pectoris at 40 years old. Among 67 subjects who had angina pectoris history, there were 71.6% who had a smoking habit history, 52.2% who had light smoking degree, and there were 50.7% who had onset of angina pectoris ≥ 60 years old. Spearman test showed there was a correlation between the degree of smoking and the onset of unstable angina pectoris (p=0,012) and (r = -0,274). People with higher Brinkman index had a risk of angina pectoris in younger age compared with those who had no history of smoking or lower brinkman index. Therefore, doctor should suggest the patients to stop their smoking habit.
