Abstract

The Merdeka Student Exchange (PMM) is part of the Kampus Merdeka program, which the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim launched in 2020. The implementation of PMM batch 2, which took place offline following the Covid-19 pandemic, resulted in a significant rise in interest compared to PMM 1. Mataram University was ranked as the most popular institution in West Nusa Tenggara Province in PMM 2 due to student motivation, the university's physical location on Lombok Island, and the availability of study programs and courses. The presence of inbound participants at Mataram University could encourage intercultural communication because participants from outside Lombok Island have their own cultural identity and must adjust to their new cultural setting. The primary objective of this research is to illuminate the intercultural communication experiences of inbound PMM 2 participants at Mataram University and their comprehension of intercultural communication dynamics. Employing a qualitative research methodology with a phenomenological approach, sample selection utilizes purposive sampling, complemented by the integration of Communication Accommodation Theory. Data collection involves semi-structured interviews with five key informants and one expert informant, alongside documentary analysis. The findings of this study reveal that the intercultural communication experiences of participants encompass initial impressions, communication barriers, and accommodation efforts as adaptive strategies. The communicative accommodation endeavors undertaken by participants include both convergence and divergence, yielding positive impacts on their communication proficiency. According to participants, intercultural communication plays a pivotal role in shaping understanding, fostering harmony, and cultivating positive relationships amidst the cultural diversity encountered by communicators.
