Abstract

This research highlights the struggle of the Jemaah Ahmadiyah Indonesia (JAI) group in fighting discrimination and persecution in Indonesia. Specifically, the focus of this research is related to the event of the sealing of the Al-Hidayah Mosque in Sawangan, Depok, West Java. The sealing of JAI's places of worship is a violation of freedom of religion and belief which should be protected by the state which has an obligation to fulfill and protect its citizens. This research aims to reveal JAI's strategy to fight for its citizenship rights again through the perspective discourse analysis of hegemony and citizenship politics. This research uses a qualitative research methodology with an emphasis on interviews and narrative analysis. It was found that there was a strong suspicion that there was a game of conflict of interests on the part of the local authorities which was building an anti-Ahmadiyah narrative among the people of Depok City. This then created strong and structured discrimination experienced by JAI in the city of Depok. In such a dangerous situation, JAI was able to offer a movement to take back their citizenship rights with a citizenship affirmation movement. This movement is not racing to change the structure, but rather to find alternative solutions so that citizenship rights can be achieved. In the case of JAI in Depok City, the citizenship affirmation movement is reflected in humanist social actions organized by JAI, dialogue with the local government, and building coalitions with civil society organizations. So JAI's strategy in fighting for its citizenship rights is unique because it adheres to the teachings of love that they believe in.
